“To Be, or Not To Be”…Actually, You Already Are

"Success in marriage does not come merely through finding the right mate, but through being the right mate." ~Barnett R. Brickner

So what does it mean to be the “right” mate?

The above quote seems to suggest that being the right mate requires changing to become someone different than you currently are. For Donna and me, we believe there is nothing you need to change. You’re already perfect. There’s nothing to fix. You are as you are for a reason.

There may, however, be a few things you haven’t heard before about the natural essence of who men are and who women are, the knowledge of which will transform both how you relate to each other and the quality of your relationship. For example, studies and the personal experience of many men have shown that when men are upset about their relationship they don’t like to talk about it, and its more difficult for them to produce at work. For their part, women want to talk about it and share what’s going on, something often referred to as “tend and befriend”. Many women, however, regard a man’s silence as worrisome, and many men regard a woman’s desire to talk as “annoying”. The inevitable complaint becomes, “Why can’t you talk more/less?”

The answer? Because that’s not who they are. When you understand the natural differences between men and women, you are free to be yourself, you are able to gift your partner with the freedom to be themselves, and then you can both freely choose how you wish to be based on that understanding. Understanding those natural differences between men and women is what our couples relationship retreats and this blog are all about. We hope you will take a few minutes to look through the blog and then consider joining us at an upcoming retreat, which is regarded by past participants as a powerful and effective alternative to marriage counselling.
